What Is A Detox?

 

Detoxification is a natural process that happens in the body.  Its purpose is to remove the different kinds of toxins that have accumulated as a result of life -- eating, drinking, taking medications and supplements, putting things on our skin, hair, nails; being exposed to pollution and other environmental factors like plastics, smoke and chemicals.

 

The organs that help the body naturally detoxify include the liver, colon, kidneys, and the lymphatic system. The lungs and the skin are also involved in the detox process.  

  • Liver – Processes/filters toxins which are then bound with bile and excreted.

  • Colon – Where nutrients are absorbed and where toxins pass through for elimination.

  • Kidneys – Blood is filtered through the kidneys and wastes are combined with water which is excreted as urine.

  • Lymphatic system – Filters and deactivates waste, bacteria, viruses, and toxins.  Also creates white blood cells (WBCs)that are responsible for immunity.

  • Lungs – Transfer oxygen into the blood and eliminate toxins through the process of exhalation.

  • Skin – Sweating is the main source of elimination through the skin, but pimples, boils, etc. are other ways that the skin expels toxins.

Why Should I Detox?

 

The main reason to do a seasonal detox and cleanse program is to support your body’s natural process.  We are bombarded with toxins in our food, water, personal care products and environment.  These are things that can be hard to avoid.  Consciously taking a break from the things in these categories that we can control can help the body more easily do what it does.  Less crap in = less for the body to have to process out!

 

When toxins get trapped or recirculate, they cause problems.  Common issues encountered with toxic overload or a sluggish detox response are:

  • Hormone imbalance: Headaches.  Moodiness. PMS.  PCOS.  Heavy or absent periods.  Painful periods.  Hair loss.  Facial hair in women.  Loss of outer third of eyebrows or thinning of lashes.  Lack of sex drive. Fertility issues. Thyroid imbalance. Weight issues/difficulty losing or gaining weight.

  • Gut issues:  IBS, acid reflux, constipation, indigestion, or food allergies / intolerances.  Even things like belly bloat or gas!

  • Sleep disturbances: Getting to sleep, staying asleep, not getting enough deep sleep, not waking rested.  Sleep disturbances can be a symptom of imbalance in hormones, blood sugar, and/or neurotransmitters. 

  • Skin issues: Acne, psoriasis, eczema, excessive oiliness, dryness, wrinkles.  The skin expresses internal imbalance.  

  • Energy: Low energy, chronic fatigue, malaise, never feeling rested.  Feeling worse after exercise.  These things are indicators of toxin overload and potentially a very sluggish detox response.

  • Mood: Mood swings.  Anxiety, depression, compulsions.  Emotional eating.
